Beginnings and endings

I know it's been a while since I last posted a blog entry. Sorry about that, but the last few weeks - hell, the last month - have been .... eventful, to say the least.

We'll dispense with the bad news first. I had a funeral to go to yesterday - my sister-in-law's brother passed away. What really moved me was seeing how many people he had touched. He was disabled and was active in the disabled (or differently-abled, however you like) community in Dallas. That church was packed. I was glad that my wife and I were able to be there for the family; even though strictly speaking they aren't actually related to us, I now feel like they are family, the kind that you choose for yourself, if that makes any sense.

Now then, the good news. I'M GONNA BE A DADDY!!

On New Year's Eve, Olivia and I came home from seeing Mona Lisa Smile (ugh) and about ten minutes later, we found out that we were pregnant. There was much giggling and exchanged looks of "Wow!" and "What the heck did we just do?!"

But wait, there's more.

Recently, Olivia was out with one of her girlfriends and noticed some spotting that shouldn't have been there. They hightailed it to the hospital and they determined that everything was okay, but that they would do an ultrasound just to be safe. According to my wife, the technician got really quiet and then asked "Ummm, do twins run in your family?" Olivia said "Yes, on my husband's side." (I have a great-grandfather somewhere that was a twin). The tech then said "Well guess what!"

So. Twins. Yep.
AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! What the hell am I going to do!!!???

Just kidding, I think it's great, but man, is it going to be a challenge. I had just wrapped my mind around the idea of being a father of ONE baby, then we got this bombshell. Yikes! I really am happy, don't get me wrong, I'm still just a little overwhelmed and not really sure how I'm going to proceed. What I do know is that I need to get my career back in gear. First step in that: getting my samples up on the website because, as much as I know you folks might like my little journal entries, the site is for "Rob Chambers, CARTOONIST", not "Rob Chambers, online diarist."

Once again in case you missed it: TWINS!

Take care,
~Rob
